Israeli Settlers Enter Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound Under Police Protection

(MENAFN) More than 200 Israeli settlers entered Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday under police protection and performed religious rituals, according to Palestinian sources.

An official from the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that 215 individuals entered the site during morning and afternoon prayer times.

Footage reportedly showed a rabbi entering the compound in religious attire and conducting prayers on the steps leading toward the Dome of the Rock.

Palestinian authorities in Jerusalem condemned the incident, calling it a violation of the sanctity of the site and an act that provokes religious sensitivities worldwide.

In a statement, the Jerusalem Governorate said the entry of worshippers led by a rabbi and their prayers inside the compound represented “a blatant violation of the sanctity of the site and a provocation of the feelings of Muslims worldwide.”

The governorate further described the incident as part of a broader pattern of escalation and repeated violations at Islamic holy sites in the city.

According to Palestinian officials, access by Israeli visitors to the compound has been occurring since 2003 under police protection despite objections from the Islamic Waqf, which manages the site.

They also noted that such incidents have increased in frequency in recent years amid heightened political tensions surrounding the administration of the holy site.
