Trump Avoids Addressing Israeli Reoccupation of Gaza
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump refrained from expressing a clear position on whether the United States would back a comprehensive Israeli reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, while stressing ongoing American-led humanitarian assistance within the territory.
"When it comes to the rest of it, I really can't say. That's going to be pretty much up to Israel," Trump told reporters Tuesday when questioned about his support for Israel reoccupying all of Gaza.
Israeli media outlets reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided, with the support of the US, to proceed with a large-scale reoccupation of Gaza, focusing on regions believed to harbor Israeli captives.
The US is "present now trying to get people fed," Trump noted, adding that the country has provided $60 million to help supply food for Gaza’s residents.
"I know Israel is going to assist us with that in terms of distribution...We also have the Arab states (which) are going to assist us with that, in terms of the money and possibly distribution. So that's what I'm focused on," he stated.
Israeli officials revealed that Netanyahu will hold a meeting with political and military leaders Tuesday to deliberate “options” for Gaza after indirect ceasefire negotiations with the Palestinian group Hamas collapsed.
The Israeli military, dismissing international demands for a ceasefire, has maintained a harsh offensive in Gaza since October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 61,000 Palestinians, nearly half of whom were women and children.
Israel’s military operation has severely damaged the territory and pushed it to the brink of famine.
