Israeli government attempts to boot director of Netanyahu corruption probe

(MENAFN) On Monday, the Israeli government unanimously voted to dismiss Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who is leading the prosecution in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial. However, the Israeli High Court immediately froze the decision pending a legal review.

Baharav-Miara has been accused by Netanyahu's allies of overstepping her authority by blocking several government actions, including an attempt to remove the head of the domestic security agency. Following the vote, she condemned the effort to oust her as illegal and pledged to continue performing her duties with integrity and adherence to the law.

“This move strikes at the heart of the rule of law, equality before the law, and the justice system’s ability to fight government corruption,” she said.

This marks the first time in Israel’s history that a sitting attorney general has faced dismissal. The High Court's intervention means the government cannot appoint a replacement or interfere with Baharav-Miara’s role until a final decision is reached.

Due to a conflict of interest stemming from his criminal charges, Netanyahu did not participate in the vote. He currently faces three cases involving bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison for bribery, and up to 3 years for each of the other charges.

Netanyahu’s trial has seen multiple delays, with courts accepting postponement requests based on diplomatic, security, and health issues. Critics argue that the attorney general’s removal is part of a broader judicial overhaul plan by Netanyahu’s government, which they warn would erode democratic checks and balances and allow the prime minister to avoid legal accountability. The reforms have sparked mass protests across the country.
